The Thrill of the Hunt
I was talking with a friend the other day in the galley of the Native Sun deep sea fishing and whale watching ship. We were on our way back from a full day of fishing in the waters around Catalina. It was our annual company fishing trip with which we thank our employees for their hard work, dependability, and professionalism throughout the year. This is a great way to interact with your employees and a few suppliers and I have found these off-site events to be very productive and lots of fun.
In chatting about the day’s events, the subject came up how that fishing is an activity that carries within it something many men crave – a few women too – the thrill of the hunt. If taking fish home was the primary goal, then how many people would show up if the activity was shooting fish in a barrel? That’s right, so the hunt for those fish is a major part of the fun while drawing on our skill, determination, tenacity, and of course, patience.
The joy of the hunt can be found in a broad spectrum of things we do or want to do. For instance, it definitely would be thrilling if you were hunting for buried treasure from a map you found, tucked away behind your grandfather’s picture while cleaning out the attic. Or, on a more serious note, in a medical team searching for and closing in on the cure for cancer.
Here’s an example you can relate to if you are old enough to remember when cars weren’t computerized, and you could work on them yourself. Remember those trips to the local Pick-a-Part to hunt for used auto parts…and you finally found what you were looking for? Very rewarding, right? Definitely worth the hunt.
Whether we inherited this desire to hunt from prehistoric hunter-gatherers, or from something not so ancient as the call to “seek and ye shall find,” it is an important desire – PERHAPS EVEN A NEED – that is built into our system. Simply said, this is how many of us are “wired.” I believe most entrepreneurs have a big dose of this kind of desire, because so much of business revolves around it.
Not all hunts are successful, of course, like a couple of fishing trips I have been on. But even though we don’t happen to bring a big sack of fish home, I always manage to have a lot of fun trying, especially spending time with my boys or my good friends.
Not all hunts are pleasant, either. Like trying to fill the various staff positions in our growing company or reviewing the latest business management computer software. I’m lucky that we have a terrific Office Manager and other management team members to do that kind of hunting for us.
What I really do enjoy on the business side of hunting, is looking for new ways and locations to grow the company. I also enjoy searching for new products and meeting their reps, as we continually expand the products and services we offer to ensure Landscape Warehouse remains on the leading edge of the irrigation supplies and nursery industries.
So, if you have been looking for a store that can meet all your landscape industry needs, one with knowledgeable and friendly staff members who speak your language and that of your crews, then visit one of our nine nearby Landscape Warehouse locations today. Congratulations my friend, YOUR HUNT IS FINALLY OVER!
